Ecuador’s President, Daniel Noboa, claimed someone attempted to poison him by placing highly toxic substances in gifts of chocolate and jam. However, Noboa has yet to provide any evidence, despite saying his team had proof.
On Thursday, Noboa told CNN that he believed it was “practically impossible" that the three chemicals would be found in high concentrations in the items by chance. The military body responsible for his security detail had filed a complaint with prosecutors.
This is the third time in two months that Noboa has alleged attempts on his life, amid violent clashes in Ecuador over anti-government protests, spiraling crime and economic turmoil. Noboa has brought in military crackdowns on drug gangs, but has also faced accusations of targeting protesters, according to BBC.
