A woman doctor from Maharashtra's Satara district has died by suicide, leaving behind a note that accuses two police officers of rape and harassment. The incident occurred late Thursday night when she was found hanging in a hotel room in Phaltan. The doctor, originally from Beed district, had been working at a government hospital in the area.
In her suicide note, written on her palm, she named Sub-Inspector Gopal Badane, alleging that he had raped and sexually harassed her multiple times over the past five months. She also accused another officer, Prashant Bankar, of subjecting her to mental harassment. Following the discovery of her body, the Satara police registered a case of rape and abetment to suicide against both officers.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has ordered the immediate suspension of the accused officers and instructed the police to take strict action. The Chief Minister's Office confirmed that the body has been sent for a post-mortem examination, and investigations into the allegations are ongoing.
Rupali Chakankar, chairperson of the Maharashtra State Women’s Commission, stated that they have taken cognizance of the matter and emphasized that those responsible will not be spared. She mentioned that teams have been deployed to locate the accused.
The incident has sparked widespread outrage, with calls for justice from various quarters. The deceased doctor’s cousin claimed she faced immense pressure from police and political figures to alter mortem reports. Opposition leaders have criticized the state government for allegedly protecting the accused officers, further igniting discussions on police accountability and the safety of women in the system. The investigation is still underway, with forensic reports pending.
