COLLETON COUNTY, S.C. (WCBD) -- The board of directors of Santee Cooper is expected to decide Friday whether to approve plans for a new power plant in Colleton County, as a recent study found it would unleash harmful pollutants into the air of surrounding communities.

The proposed Canady's station would be jointly owned by Santee Cooper and Dominion Energy, two of the state's largest energy providers, and located between Walterboro and St. George at the site of the former Dominion coal plant.

The utility companies have estimated that the natural gas plant would produce 2,000 megawatts of energy per year, enough to power half a million homes. It would also boost grid reliability and provide economic development opportunities, they said.
