GREEN BAY, Wis. (WBAY) - While we hope mosquitoes won’t be a problem much longer this season, the Wisconsin Department of Health Services wants you to keep an eye out for them after a horse tested positive for the EEE virus last week.
The horse that tested positive for Eastern equine encephilitis was from Marathon County. Health officials say the virus could spread quickly because of the warm fall we’ve had this year.
It’s rare in humans because it can only be transferred from an infected mosquito. It does not spread from horses to people or from person to person.
Symptoms range from being flu-like to an infection that involves the swelling of the brain.
It can be fatal depending on the severity and the age of the person who gets it.
