Residents were evacuated from several buildings in Manchester city centre this afternoon after a tower block partially collapsed, creating what many described as an "earthquake-like feeling". The incident occurred near Bridge Street, where the structure was reportedly slated for demolition.
Witnesses reported a strong rumble as part of the building fell away. One local resident, who works nearby, stated, "I felt a strong earthquake-like feeling before emergency services arrived and evacuated the area."
Emergency services responded swiftly, with Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue deploying a fire engine to St Mary’s Parsonage shortly after 2:50 PM. A spokesperson for the fire service confirmed, "One fire engine from Manchester Central attended St Mary’s Parsonage just after 2.50pm today after scaffolding on a building being demolished partially collapsed. No people were involved, and the crew are leaving this with building control."
Images from the scene depict the dramatic aftermath of the collapse, showing the structure nearly folded over, with scaffolding hanging precariously towards the street below. Firefighters were seen working diligently to ensure the safety of the area following the incident.
Authorities are currently assessing the situation, and further updates are expected as investigations continue into the cause of the collapse and the status of the surrounding buildings.
