Part of a building in a major UK city has collapsed in a frightening incident which caused emergency services to rush to the scene.

A scaffolding failure was confirmed to have occurred at Alberton House in Manchester this afternoon (October 24). The large building is currently being knocked down to make way for a new development at the site just off Bridge Street.

Those residing and working in nearby buildings said there was a 'strong earthquake like feeling' at the time, with surrounding buildings forced to be evacuated, according to the Manchester Evening News.

Another witness added: “We were shaking and we didn’t know if the building was coming down, then we saw the plumes of dust."
