OTTAWA—Prime Minister Mark Carney reacted calmly to the late-night blowup by U.S. President Donald Trump of trade talks, saying it underlines how Canada must diversify its trade ties, build resilience at home, and be ready to restart talks “when the Americans are ready.”
“We can’t control the trade policy of the United States,” Carney told reporters, on the tarmac ahead of his plane departing for Asia Friday.
Carney said it is the United States that has changed, and Canada must adjust.
“We recognize that that policy has fundamentally changed from the policy in the 1980s, 1990s, 2000s and it’s a situation where the United States has tariffs against every one of their trading partners to different degrees.”
