Health experts are warning about a dangerous trend among teenagers and college students — choking during sex — which they say can cause serious injury or even death.

One young woman surveyed said choking during sex feels “no different than getting a hickey,” but experts say it can cause brain damage or death. Experts urge parents to talk to their children about the risks before it's too late.

Memes about choking during sex are widespread, often making it seem humorous or accepted. But Gael Strack with the Training Institute on Strangulation Prevention said the proper term is “strangulation.” She said it can cause headaches, blurred vision, memory problems, brain damage, blood clots, heart attacks and even death — especially with repeated incidents.
