Bell Island resident Katherine Walters is skeptical of the Progressive Conservative promise to boost ferry services in Newfoundland and Labrador, but an industry CEO says building the vessels in the province is feasible.

While on the campaign trail, premier-designate Tony Wakeham pledged he’d add four new vessels to the province’s ferry fleet and prioritize building them locally.

Katherine Walters, who advocates for improved Bell Island ferry services, called those promises “great election fodder.”

“I don't mean to sound a little cynical, but it wouldn't be the first time the province’s ferry system has had an incoming political party offering to spend money, and that hasn't solved the underlying problems,” Walters told CBC Radio’s .
