BATON ROUGE, La. - Gov. Jeff Landry signed an emergency declaration Thursday to secure stopgap state funding for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits for Louisiana residents, citing a failure by federal officials to ensure continuous program funding.

The declaration provides state funds aimed at covering benefits for the elderly, disabled residents and children who rely on the federal food assistance program.

Landry used the occasion to contrast the federal situation with Louisiana’s economic growth, noting the state's efforts to move people off welfare programs and into the workforce.
