A beloved pig known to bring comfort and joy across Montgomery County is fighting to recover after a vicious attack left him with multiple deep wounds, his owner said.
Oliver the pig — a well-known companion animal who loves a good cuddle — was “viciously attacked” by what is believed to have been a loose dog or dogs while resting in his barn earlier this week, according to his owner, Emily Hanna of Gaithersburg.
“Oliver suffered significant wounds, including deep, 2-inch puncture wounds from bites around his head and neck, a shredded ear, and a large laceration in his flank that went through several layers of muscle,” Hanna said.
Oliver underwent emergency surgery at New Bolton Medical Center, where veterinarians cleaned and repaired his injuries. His prognosis is currently good, Hanna said, but recovery will be long and painful.
“He is expected to stay in the hospital for the next week before returning to Montgomery County with me, so I can continue providing him close care and support,” she wrote.
The vet costs are expected to exceed $3,000, not including the emergency care he received before transport.
Hanna has launched a GoFundMe titled “Help Oliver Pig Recover from Vicious Attack”, where supporters have already begun donating to help cover medical bills.
“While I am committed to providing the best care I possibly can for Oliver, I am humbly asking for extra support from his friends and following who have also known and loved him,” she said.
As of Friday afternoon, the fundraiser had drawn nearly $1,000 in donations from supporters across the community.
