An asylum seeker jailed for sexually assaulting a woman and a 14-year-old girl has been accidentally released from jail.

It has been revealed that Ethiopian national Hadush Gerberslasie Kebatu, 38, who had been living at the Bell Hotel in Epping, was mistakenly released instead of being deported after being jailed for 12 months in September.

A prison officer has been taken off duties to discharge prisoners while an investigation is under way.

The horrific case sparked nationwide protests and Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy said he is “appalled” by the error.
