BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ( WBRC ) - More than 750,000 Alabama SNAP recipients have received no official notification about potential benefit disruptions, even as dozens of other states have warned residents that food assistance payments might stop in November because of the ongoing government shutdown.
Funding for Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits is provided by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). States administer the funds and operate the program.
The USDA told states almost two weeks ago there would not be enough money to cover these benefits in November without a congressional deal to end the shutdown.
Several states , including Tennessee, Texas, Maine, Virginia, California, Florida, and dozens more have issued warnings that SNAP funding is in jeopardy.
