A trustee from the Brant Haldimand Norfolk Catholic District School Board has resigned following pressure from provincial legislation aimed at removing him from office. Mark Watson's resignation comes after he faced scrutiny for not repaying his share of expenses from a controversial trip to Italy. The trip, which cost the board approximately $190,000, involved Watson and three other trustees flying first-class and purchasing art and statues for a new school.
The board's chair, Carol Luciani, expressed respect for Watson's decision to step down. "We respect Trustee Watson’s decision to step down from the board and will move forward, collaboratively, with a continued focus on teaching and learning, student well-being, and the strategic priorities that guide our Catholic school system," she stated in a release posted on the board's website.
Watson's resignation will take effect once it is approved at the upcoming board meeting on Tuesday. The legislation, introduced by Education Minister Paul Calandra, sought to remove Watson from his position and prevent him from running for office until 2030. Calandra remarked, "It is unfortunate our government had to introduce legislation for Mr. Watson to finally do the right thing. His resignation was long overdue."
The trip to Italy, which took place in the summer of 2024, has been a focal point of criticism regarding the use of public funds. Watson was the only trustee among the group who did not fully reimburse the board. While he paid about $1,200, it remains unclear if he has made any additional payments toward the more than $12,000 he still owes.
Calandra emphasized the need for accountability in education, stating, "I expect him to pay it back." He plans to continue with the legislation to ensure that a clear message is sent regarding the importance of integrity in the education system. Attempts to reach Watson for comment through the school board were unsuccessful.
