The Liberal candidate for Lewisporte-Twillingate has requested a judicial recount in the district after narrowly losing his seat to Progressive Conservative Mark Butt by 18 votes.
Derek Bennett wrote in a statement Friday evening that he has submitted an application to the Supreme Court of Newfoundland and Labrador.
He wrote that the district's voters "deserve confidence in the integrity and accuracy of our democratic process."
He also referred to "extraordinary circumstances" on election day, but did not elaborate. Bennett's statement said he would not offer further comments on the matter until the votes are recounted.
Candidates have 10 days from the official count to apply for a recount if they believe ballots were improperly added up, among other reasons.
