TUCSON, Ariz. (KVOA) - The University of Arizona's Biosphere 2 has taken a significant step in conservation efforts by introducing the endangered Sonoyta pupfish into its habitat. This initiative aims to boost the population of the rare species.
A total of 48 Sonoyta pupfish have been released into a new freshwater stream within the Desert Biome at Biosphere 2. This marks an important development for the species, which has only around 2,000 individuals left globally, with a single natural population residing at Organ Pipe National Monument near the U.S.-Mexico border.
"They seem to be very happy in their new home," Peter Reinthal said, a professor from the University of Arizona's Ecology and Evolutionary Biology department.
