A lot of people here in Connecticut are watching a major storm churning in the Caribbean.

Melissa is expected to strengthen into a powerful hurricane and the impacts of Melissa could start being felt in Jamaica over the weekend.

It doesn’t take long to find someone in the Hartford area with a connection to Jamaica.

Now many say their thoughts and prayers are for family and friends there.

“Everybody's just kind of watching out, trying to see when it's going to hit. They don't necessarily know. So it's kind of a waiting game right now,” said Quinayza Jones of Hartford.

Connecticut is one of the states with the most Jamaican-Americans, numbering around 60,000 people.
