Muir Woods is open for business thanks to a lot of behind-the-scenes work and a small group of park vendors.
The owner of Must See Tours, Faycal Bouabdallah, said he got the idea after seeing places like Alcatraz and Pearl Harbor reopen during the shutdown.
He reached out to the National Parks Service, and they told him it would cost $4600 a day to pay for park rangers, maintenance crews, and other staff.
The tour operator got to work and started reaching out to other businesses that operate in the park. Eventually, two more vendors stepped up and the group ended up obtaining $46,000 in donations to keep the national park open through Oct. 31.
Bouabdallah talked with NBC Bay Area about the idea, and his plans if the government shutdown continues.
