MARQUETTE, Mich. (WILX) - Michigan State hockey secured its second shutout of the season on Friday night, taking down Northern Michigan, 4-0, from the Berry Events Center.

“Northern made it really hard on us, especially in the first period,” said Michigan State head coach Adam Nightingale. “We got to our game in the second and I thought our penalty kill did a heck of a job. Trey (Augustine) made some saves when we needed him to make some saves.”

The Spartans improve to 4-1-0 overall while Northern Michigan falls to 0-7-0. MSU returns to the Berry Events Center on Saturday night for game two of the series at 6:00 p.m.

Michigan State out-shot NMU, 40-24, and held a 40-32 face-off advantage. The Spartans found success on the penalty kill all night going 6-for-6 in shutting down the Wildcat
