Do you remember where you were on the night of Oct. 30, 1995?

I was in a small CJAD studio on Fort St. as results of Quebec’s second sovereignty referendum were being tallied, nervously watching a TV screen where the blue line (Yes) at the bottom kept creeping beyond the 50 per cent mark.

By the end of the evening, it finally retreated to 49.4 — the No side having eked out a narrow victory and allowing a collective sigh of relief for shell-shocked federalists, whose leadership seemed caught completely off guard.
