ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) - The driver of a stolen U-Haul died on Friday morning in a shooting involving Smyrna police, according to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI).
Police said the incident happened at the intersection of Concord Road and McLinden Avenue near the Vickery Ace Hardware store at around 6 a.m.
The GBI said officers tried to pull over the U-Haul and “gave the driver numerous commands” to stop.
According to the GBI, “a gunshot was fired from the U-Haul and officers returned fire.”
Smyrna police said the driver, identified as 46-year-old Darrick Desawn Rooks, fatally shot himself.
Rooks’ fiancé told Atlanta News First he left her a voicemail early Friday morning and was asking for help.
“I heard, ‘Help, help me. Somebody help me,’” Chantel said.
