AUSTIN (KXAN) — On Friday, Austin city leaders celebrated the opening of the newly completed Biofiltration Pond in downtown Austin.

The pond is located at the Waterloo Greenway, and it's the only one of its kind in the area. It was designed to help filter stormwater runoff from the streets, as well as improve water quality.

The pond is also expected to remove debris before it gets to Waller Creek and eventually Lady Bird Lake. • Newly completed Biofiltration Pond in downtown Austin (KXAN photo/Todd Bailey) • Newly completed Biofiltration Pond in downtown Austin (KXAN photo/Todd Bailey) • Waterloo Greenway project plans Waterloo Greenway project plans (KXAN photo/Todd Bailey) • Grand opening ceremony for Austin’s Biofiltration Pond (KXAN photo/Todd Bailey) • Grand opening ceremo
