Colombian President Petro Says U.S. Sanctions Won’t Touch Him, Has No U.S. Assets Colombian President Gustavo Petro declared that U.S. financial sanctions imposed by Donald Trump’s administration have no effect on him, as he holds no assets or bank accounts in the country. Speaking from Bogota’s Plaza de Bolivar, Petro emphasized he does not intend to conduct business in the United States. The sanctions target Petro, his wife, and son Nicolas, blocking any U.S.-based property and international transactions through American channels. Tensions between Washington and Bogota escalated after Petro attended a pro-Palestine protest at the UN General Assembly and the U.S. removed Colombia from its list of cooperating countries against drug trafficking.
