BOSTON — With federal deportation raids targeting Massachusetts and other Democratic-led states, a coalition of civil rights groups and unions are urging Beacon Hill lawmakers to approve new legal protections for immigrants.

The groups, which include the Massachusetts Immigrant and Refugee Advocacy Coalition and the American Civil Liberties Union, are pressuring legislative leaders to pass a package of bills that would provide “no-cost” immigration legal defense to migrants at imminent risk of deportation and block state and local law enforcement from asking people about their immigration status.
