BOSTON — Plans to remove hundreds of navigational buoys from New England waters have been scuttled after a backlash from harbormasters, commercial fishermen and other mariners.

The U.S. Coast Guard announced Tuesday that after receiving more than 3,200 public comments on its Coastal Buoy Modernization proposal, it has decided to “conduct further analysis” of the plan before making any changes. The agency said it is pausing its planned removal of hundreds of buoys and extending the public comment period until Nov. 15.
