After a big report dropped on Sunday from The Athletic's Dianna Russini that Texas football coach Steve Sarkisian could have interest in the NFL for next season, the coach's representation refuted the report.
"I’m told that representatives for Texas coach Steve Sarkisian have let NFL decision makers know that he would be interested in potential head coaching openings, including the Titans’," Russini shared about Sarkisian on Saturday, who has been at Texas as its head coach since 2021.
OLE MISS: What Lane Kiffin told players about coaching carousel rumors
Amid a disappointing start where highly touted quarterback Arch Manning has struggled with consistency in his first full season starting for the Longhorns, it would make sense for Sarkisian to put out his feelers for an NFL gig.
However, Sarkisian's CAA reps Jimmy Sexton and Ed Marynowitz denied Russini's report on Saturday, saying that "any reports regarding communications on coaching opportunities with NFL teams are patently false and wildly inaccurate. Sark is solely focused on coaching the University of Texas football team."
Sarkisian hasn't coached in the NFL since 2018 when he spent two seasons as the offensive coordinator of the Atlanta Falcons under coach Dan Quinn. He spent one season in 2004 as the then-Oakland Raiders' quarterbacks coach. Other than that, all of Sark's experience comes at the college level.
If Texas continues to slip in the rankings, it would be reasonable for Sarkisian to explore opportunities in the NFL while his star is still relatively hot. The Tennessee Titans make sense with Sarkisian highly regarded for his work with quarterbacks. Him getting his chance to coach quarterback Cam Ward is definitely intriguing.
However, Sark seems committed to Texas, as least for now. He's not headed back to the NFL... at least not yet.
