When Chef Nutcha Phanthoupheng opened her restaurant Baan Lao in 2021, she set out to introduce more palettes to “true” Thai cuisine.

Located at 4100 Bayview St. in Richmond, the eatery has since become celebrated for its food and service, racking up awards in its four-year history.

The latest nod to Phanthoupheng and her team’s talent is the announcement of Baan Lao as the Best Restaurant in Canada at the prestigious World Culinary Awards in Sardinia, Italy, on Oct. 23. It’s the second time the establishment has won the international award, making the fine dining Thai restaurant the first Canadian restaurant to do so.

The recent accolade is just one in a growing list of achievements for the Richmond eatery.
