These little flies mean a lot.

So much that volunteers gave up part of the weekend to help restore their habitat.

Several agencies and groups joined Saturday morning, Oct. 25, for a project to restore the habitat of the endangered Delhi Sands flower-loving fly. Much of its area has disappeared over the years because of development.

Volunteers met behind a Fontana neighborhood in the Jurupa Hills to pull plants out of the ground, collect native buckwheat seeds and otherwise thin the area’s vegetation to enhance the flies’ habitat. The work will help support the fly and other wildlife species that live there.
