CHARLESTON — South Carolina’s first Four Seasons resort will break ground this year in downtown Charleston, but the construction phase will have a lingering impact on the area for several years as the project rises from the ground.

The developer is moving forward with plans to demolish the former Days Inn motel at 155 Meeting St., but to do so, it's seeking an agreement with the city to set up a staging area for up to several years off nearby Market Street.

Pinnacle Mountain Holdings LLC, which is affiliated with Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates' Cascade Investment, received approval last month from Charleston’s Real Estate Committee to use properties adjacent to the site for $5,600 a month, or $201,600.

The 36-month lease includes the possibility for two one-year extensions.
