GRANVILLE — A large private pond in the ultra-rural outskirts of Granville is not a likely spot for a trumpeter swan to land. But this large, white bird has bucked the odds before: During the past 90 years, it has pulled itself from the brink of extinction.

Chris George, an eBird user, was the first to report the lone bird when he saw it Oct. 12 at Martins Pond. Since the initial sighting, 15 users have trekked out to see the swan — myself included. The reports of the first-ever trumpeter swan in Washington County continued through Thursday.
