WEST LAFAYETTE, Indiana – The ball sailed through the uprights and jubilation ensued on Rutgers football’s sideline .
Coach Greg Schiano, whose team had just broken a four-game losing streak that ignited questions about the program’s status, pumped his fists, screamed and dropped to a knee.
This victory, this wild, back-and-forth, momentum-shifting, season-saving victory, was one the Scarlet Knights badly needed.
Jai Patel’s 30-yard field goal with two seconds left secured the 27-24 win over Purdue Oct. 25 at Ross-Ade Stadium, giving the Scarlet Knights their first Big Ten win of the season and first victory since Sept. 13 against Norfolk State.
Nothing about this win came easily.
But that’s fitting because nothing about this season has been easy, either.
