KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — In Corryton, on Saturday, community members gathered together to honor military veterans and service heroes at the Tennessee Heroes Fall Fest.

The festival was hosted by the Respect and Remember Foundation and raised money for local JROTC programs in the community.

The nonprofit was started in honor of Army Sergeant Ryan Knauss, the last soldier killed during the United States' pullout from Afghanistan in 2021.

10News spoke to Knauss' mother, Paula, at today's event.

"He did his very best — until the end of his 23 years — serving our county," Paula said. "So, we give back to the kids that are also going in, so that they can take his place and move forward with our nation, so that we can stay free and protected and proud."
