DICKINSON, ND (KXNET) — Carnegie Libraries across America are receiving a gift of $10,000 to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, the Carnegie Corporation of New York announced. Among them is the Dickinson Area Public Library.
Andrew Carnegie was a Scottish immigrant who funded the construction of over 1,600 libraries between 1890 and 1922. More than 1,200 of the Carnegie libraries are still operating throughout the US, with roughly 750 still in their original buildings.
In North Dakota, Carnegie funded eight public libraries and three academic libraries; of those libraries, three are still operating in their original Carnegie-funded buildings. One in Grafton, one in Valley City, and one in Dickinson.
