BISMARCK, ND (KXNET) — North Dakota's Winter Weather Awareness Week is officially underway. It's an opportunity to promote awareness, preparedness, and safety ahead of another frigid northern winter.

Over the next several days, we will be brushing up on some common wintertime topics to help keep you and those around you safe and informed once temperatures start to plummet and the ground turns white.

For winter weather events, the National Weather Service has three types of bulletins.

A "watch" is usually issued between 36 and 48 hours — about a day or two — before the onset of hazardous weather.
