As families gathered for a trick-or-treat party near the Pierce County town of Roy, a tree fell and killed a young man, injuring six others Saturday afternoon.
The leafy deciduous tree snapped during a wind gust, landing directly on tents at McKenna Park near the Nisqually River, where 40 to 80 people were celebrating under the tents or nearby.
Six to eight people were trapped under tents or tree branches, including a 31-year-old man who died from the impact, said Deputy Carly Cappetto, spokesperson for the Pierce County sheriff’s department. Three people were taken to hospitals for injuries including broken bones, while three more were treated on-site for cuts and bruises. The location, 27 miles south of Tacoma, made the emergency response and hospital transports a challenge, she said.
