A long-standing Grand Junction weekend night activity has come under scrutiny as law enforcement is taking a closer look at the car meets around town after what police have described as an increase in illegal and dangerous activity.
Grand Junction Police Chief Matt Smith said the car meets have been around for decades, but some behavior at recent meets has escalated into the realm of illegal and/or dangerous activity.
“They’re a wide variety of adults and kids that pull into these parking lots and gather, hang out for lack of a better term, and it isn’t something that is necessarily new,” Smith said.
What is new, Smith said, is there has been an uptick in dangerous and illegal activity at those meets, although most people who attend don’t engage in those sorts of behaviors.
