GAINESVILLE, Fla. (WCJB) - Several Caribbean islands are under hurricane watches and warnings for the impacts of Hurricane Melissa, according to the National Hurricane Center.
The cyclone quickly intensified into a Major Category 3 hurricane seemingly overnight, after maintaining tropical storm status up until Saturday.
Melissa has already had deadly impacts as it moved through the Caribbean as a tropical storm for the past few days. Haiti’s Civil Protection Agency reported a landslide in a commune of Port-au-Prince, which killed two people on Thursday.
The NHC says Melissa is forecasted to strengthen into a Category 5 by the time it makes landfall in Jamaica on Tuesday, which means winds of at least 157 miles per hour.
