EAST LANSING — As Jonathan Smith held his postgame press conference late Saturday night in Spartan Stadium, the room reeked of inevitability.

And for the first time publicly, Michigan State’s second-year football coach seemed to recognize it, sounding frustrated and defeated.

When asked what he’d title Saturday’s 31-20 loss to Michigan if it were a chapter in a book, Smith replied, “It’s just not good enough, in regards to, definitely this chapter.”
