Everyone’s attitude seems different, more vibrant. It's the anticipation of leaving behind the summer sweat dripping off our foreheads, to brisk air turning our noses and cheeks red.

Pumpkin spice starts appearing in all manner of food, except maybe jambalaya. Children’s shoulders droop as school begins; parents think it is the happiest time of the year. We get cheerier as we put away our gardening equipment in favor of seasonal decorations. It's about getting our morning motors running by warming up with a bowl of buttery grits and finishing the day with sassafras expanding our nostrils from a pot of steamy gumbo.
