METROPOLIS, Ill. (WSIL) -- The Metropolis Fire Department, along with the American Red Cross of Western Kentucky, made the community a little safer by installing smoke detectors in homes on Saturday.

By the end of the day, the Metropolis Fire Department said 63 new smoke detectors were installed, with several homes now better protected.

The fire department said one standout moment involved helping a hearing-impaired resident by installing a special smoke alarm that shakes the bed if a detector goes off while they’re asleep.

“We can’t thank the American Red Cross enough for their partnership, hard work, and dedication. Together, we’re not just installing alarms — we’re saving lives,” said the Metropolis Fire Department in an online post.
