It wasn’t much of a surprise when McKeesport was handed the top seed in the WPIAL Class 4A playoffs.

“It’s good. I’s rather be the Number 1 than the last seed,” McKeesport coach Matt Miller said. “We finished the year strong, so I guess it was deserving. Once we were at full strength, we kind of showed people we’re a pretty good team.”

Despite a slow 2-3 start to the season, the Tigers nearly upset Class 5A Upper St. Clair before they won their last five games and claimed the Greater Allegheny Conference title.

What was surprising was how long it had been since the last time the Tigers sat atop a WPIAL bracket.

Believe it or not, it has been 31 years since McKeesport last went into the tournament as the top seed in Class 4A, which was also back when there were only four classifications
