The NBA might not be the only major American sports league dealing with a gambling scandal soon.
On Sunday, Pablo Torre reported that Hall of Fame Los Angeles Chargers tight end Antonio Gates allegedly hosted and played in a rigged Miami poker game. Beyond the implication that Gates hosted and played in said game, his exact alleged role in it remains unclear at this time. It is also uncertain when the game might have happened and how precisely it was "rigged," so to speak. However, the apparent game did allegedly involve Curtis Meeks, who was indicted by the U.S. government in the scandal that upended the NBA last Thursday.
Whatever happened here, it potentially might not be the best look for Gates or the NFL from an integrity perspective:
Gates, 45, was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in August 2025. He was an eight-time Pro Bowler and three-time First-Team All-Pro during his NFL career, of which he spent entirely with the Chargers. Gates was among the most prolific and productive receiving tight ends in pro football history.
We'll update this story about Gates accordingly if and when more information is revealed.
