REEDSBURG, Wis. (WMTV) - Wisconsin families with children who are deaf and blind are nervous about the future of the Department of Public Instruction’s Deafblind Technical Assistance Project.
In September, the U.S. Department of Education cut all funding to the program in the middle of its over $550,000 grant cycle.
In October, state education officials secured a grant from the National Center on Deafblindness. The grant will extend services for the next year.
Despite the temporary fix, Casey and Leah Garner, parents of a deafblind child, are nervous about the program’s future.
“When I first got the e-mail, I called Casey and I’m like, please tell me this is a mistake. I was devastated,” Leah said.
