Problem gambling is not a matter of shutting down facilities, according to Warwick Harrison, Senior Gambling Counsellor from GambleAware Far & Western NSW region.
The 10,000 participants from the NSW Gambling Survey 2024 agree.
"People who end up with addictions are often the most confident people who believe from the start 'I'm gambling but I can stop'," Mr Harrison said.
"Thinking like that is a trap."
One in five NSW residents have reported some form of gambling harm.
Four in five respondents agreed it is the individual's responsibility to manage their own gambling, according to the report.
It said men and people living outside of metropolitan areas were more likely to agree.
