Homestead's Joe Garrean became the first freshman to win the singles title at the IHSAA Boys Tennis Individual State Tournament on Saturday, beating Bishop Chatard sophomore Casey Beckmann 6-4, 6-4 in the championship match at Park Tudor in Indianapolis.
Garrean went 28-3 this season and 11-0 in matches during the team and individual state tournaments. He beat Castle sophomore Henry Trapp 6-2, 6-1 in the semifinal round on Saturday morning, becoming the first freshman to advance to the individual championship.
Garrean and the Spartans played in the team state finals at North Central last week, where they fell 3-2 to Carmel in the championship match. Garrean won his match against Carmel's Wes Worobel 6-4, 6-3.
