Flights in and out of Newark Liberty International Airport were significantly delayed Sunday evening as the government shutdown is stressing the air traffic control system.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has a “traffic management program” in effect at the airport due to “staffing,” alerts show .

And that is causing some arriving flights to be, on average, delayed an hour and 22 minutes at their airport or origin.

Departure delays are averaging 26 minutes, according to FlightAware.com .

On Friday, the airport had 348 total delays. As of 7:30 p.m. Friday, the airport was experiencing arrival delays of just 30 minutes, and inbound flights were delayed at their airport of origin for an average of 55 minutes.
