Pat Cummins will resume bowling this week amid optimism he will feature in the second Ashes Test , but Australian coach Andrew McDonald acknowledged there is no guarantee the skipper will play at the Gabba in early December.

Conceding the champion bowler had simply “run out of time” to play in the Ashes opener in Perth on November 21, the Australian team’s medical staff will monitor Cummins closely as he continues to recover from a significant back injury.

“We’ve grappled with it for a little while and the nature of the injury is that you never know. You’re taking it a little bit day by day and we’ve run out of time,” he said.
