NEW DELHI: CJI B R Gavai on Monday recommended the name of his Supreme Court colleague and the senior-most judge after him, Justice Surya Kant, as his successor for the post of Chief Justice of India . CJI Gavai has sent the letter of recommendation to the Union law ministry. The appointment of the CJI is guided by the Memorandum of Procedure (MoP), which outlines the process for appointing, transferring, and elevating judges to the Supreme Court and high courts. Justice Surya Kant will become the 53rd Chief Justice of India and is set to assume office on November 23, once the Centre issues the formal notification.
