An existing contraceptive method will soon become cheaper for Australian women after the federal government announced an expansion of the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme.

The NuvaRing is a vaginal ring that releases a combination of oestrogen and progestogen, similar to the contraceptive pill, to prevent ovulation. The tool is self-administered, requires monthly replacement and is 99 per cent effective when used correctly.

A three-pack of the contraception is available from standard chemists for $130.

From Saturday November 1, a single prescription will cover the same three-pack for $31.60 or $7.70 for women on concession.

From January 1, the maximum amount paid per script will decrease to $25.
