Cyclone Montha is expected to intensify into a severe cyclonic storm by October 28, with landfall anticipated near Kakinada, Andhra Pradesh. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned that wind speeds could reach 90-100 kmph, with gusts up to 110 kmph. Red alerts have been issued for several districts in Andhra Pradesh, including Kakinada, Konaseema, West Godavari, Krishna, Bapatla, Prakasam, and Nellore, as well as for four districts in Telangana: Bhupalpally, Mulugu, Bhadradri Kothagudem, and Mahabubabad.
The Andhra Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority (APSDMA) has mobilized nine teams of the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and seven teams of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) to assist in relief operations. District Collectors have been authorized to access funds under TR-27 for immediate rescue and relief efforts, with a total of Rs 19 crore allocated for the 26 districts. Collectors are instructed to prioritize the evacuation of residents from flood-prone areas to relief camps, ensuring access to safe drinking water, food, and health services.
Heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected in Kakinada, Konaseema, West Godavari, Krishna, Bapatla, Prakasam, and Nellore on October 28, with similar conditions forecasted for Srikakulam, Vizianagaram, and other districts in the following days. The IMD has also issued alerts for Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu, predicting moderate to heavy rainfall and thunderstorms in several districts.
In Odisha, preparations are underway as the state government has begun evacuating residents from vulnerable areas. A total of 128 disaster response teams have been deployed across eight southern districts. The Odisha government aims for zero casualties and has issued a red alert for several districts, anticipating extremely heavy rainfall and strong winds. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea until October 29 due to the impending cyclone.
As Cyclone Montha approaches, authorities are taking extensive measures to ensure the safety and well-being of residents in affected regions.
